Mumbai Indians are still in the game, hoping to have another successful year. After the eventful auction for players that happened a few weeks ago, it is clear that this year is likely to be very competitive. Mumbai Indians (MI) has made some witty purchases with big buys like Nathan Coulter and Chris Lynn. This renowned team can spot great talent, the likes of Rahul Chahar, one of the reasons they have managed to record winnings in the past. Will the team manage to defend their title in the IPL 2020?
While the team may have done it in the past, below are reasons why they may or may not be able to take the crown home.
Why MI could defend their title
- Quality auction buys
Chris Lynn, the Big Bash League’s top batsman has registered impressive performance in the IPL such as the 405 runs he scored for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). Other good acquisitions were Saurabh Tiwary and Nathan Coulter who would make for great pacer and middle-order batsman respectively.
- A great combination of youth and experience
In a game like the IPL 2020 which requires players to be fit for months on the go, a good combination of youth and experience is essential, and MI has it. Young players such as Rahul Chahar and Krunal Pandya’s high spin quality is a good asset for the team. Suryakumar Yadav has hit big scores and knocked sixes. A player like Malinga is an excellent addition to their bowling squad while being able to mentor other players like Jasprit.
Why MI may not defend their title
- Their backup is not the best
Sure, MI has placed some quality players on the bench. Some of these players such as Shefane Rutherford and Chris Lynn could even qualify to be on the starting teams of other teams. The players, however, are not guaranteed to be as effective as they should be.
If anything were to happen to the main players, we would have to worry about their spinning potential. MI also accepted some players for the IPL 2020 which other franchises had rejected due to their previous underperformance. We just have to wait and see how that goes.
- Some big players are not in such good form
MI has nurtured some promising young folks like Hardik Pandya and Jasprit who became real assets for the team. The team also has the much-needed experience in players such as Rohit Sharma and Malinga who have played in over 200 IPLs.
All these experiences is much-needed for a huge tournament such as the IPL 2020. However, some of these players’ fitness is in question. Hardik, for example, may not be available for India’s selection as he is unfit. Jasprit comeback is after a lengthy injury lay-off, and other players like Pandya and Malinga have not showcased any special prowess in the past one year in T20 cricket games.
With these considerations in mind, we can only wait and see how MI will strive to win the IPL 2020 games.
